Unique Identifiers (UID) and Identity Verification (IDV) with Companies House

What is Identity Verification (IDV)?

As part of the new measures introduced by the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 (ECCTA), Companies House is rolling out an identity verification (IDV) process aimed at reducing economic crime and increasing corporate transparency.

Under these new rules, anyone involved in forming, managing, owning, or exercising control over a legal entity in the UK will be required to verify their identity — a process known as IDV.

 Who Needs to Complete IDV?

  • New entities: All directors, LLP members, and people with significant control (PSCs) must complete IDV before registration.
  • Existing entities: These individuals will have a transition period to complete their IDV and align with the new requirements.

When Does It Start?

As of 8 April 2025, individuals can begin verifying their identities and receiving a personal code from Companies House. While this code isn’t required immediately, current timelines indicate it will become mandatory from Q3 2025.

 How Can You Complete IDV?

There are two routes to verify your identity:

  1. Directly with Companies House via https://signin.account.gov.uk/sign-in-or-create
  2. Through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP)

Regardless of the method chosen, Companies House will send a unique personal code also known as a UID directly to the individual via email. Note: Each UID requires a separate email address, meaning ACSPs cannot centralise codes for multiple clients under one email. This might create a few logistical headaches for those managing large client portfolios.

What is a UID (Unique Identifier)?

The UID is a unique identification code issued by Companies House once an individual completes the IDV process. This code is essential for future filings and helps link individuals to their roles across different entities.

Whether you verify through One Login or via an ACSP, Companies House will always email your UID directly to you to comply with data protection regulations. Even if an ACSP helps you with the process, the UID will still land in your inbox not theirs.
