The London Legal Walk – helping to raise money for free legal advice services

The London Legal Walk

Bowling & Co Solicitors and a brave group of intrepid walkers will dust off their trainers on Tuesday the 13th of June to raise money and participate in the London Legal Walk.

The London Legal Walk, which has been taking place for 19 years, is an annual event that brings together the legal community to raise funds in support of free legal advice services across London and ensures that legal help reaches our community’s most vulnerable people.

The event aims to address the increasing need for legal assistance in areas such as debt, benefits, housing, asylum, and domestic violence. Over 13.4 million people live in poverty in the UK and advice providers are at breaking point with the growing need from their clients. Many people cannot afford legal help and we believe everybody should be able to receive legal advice when they need it most.

Receiving good legal advice at the right time can make a huge difference to people’s lives reducing their chances of facing debt, poverty, homelessness, exploitation and discrimination.

Our London Legal Walk(ers)

This year we will be walking with the Lord Chief Justice and thousands of people from the legal community to raise funds for the London Legal Support Trust. The walk welcomes lawyers, clients, support staff, friends, and family to take part. Even well-socialised dogs are welcome provided they are on a lead.

Our enthusiastic walkers will spend the remaining days before the walk training to ensure they are well prepared on the day. Dressed in navy-blue shirts with bold Bowling & Co Solicitors branding, they will start their 10km walk on the day at Carey Street behind the Royal Courts of Justice along with thousands of other walkers. The route will hopefully take approximately 2-3 hours to complete and will end in a well-deserved street party on Carey Street.

In 2022 the event raised £720k to support the provision of free legal advice in London and the South East. The London Legal Walk is the biggest fundraising event in aid of free legal advice and support for everything from Law Centres and Citizens Advice services to refugee specialist support services.

The event supports over 100 legal advice agencies in London and the South East. We know that these agencies do a fantastic job in changing people’s lives which is why we would love your support. Should you wish to donate.

Who is The London Legal Support Trust (LLST)?

The LLST was established in 2003 to address the issue of insufficient funding for accessing legal advice, and since then, it has raised millions of pounds to improve access to justice. Funding cuts in legal aid and local authorities have led to a reduction in the number of free legal advice agencies, exacerbating the problems faced by individuals in areas such as welfare benefits, employment disputes, immigration and asylum issues, discrimination, housing, and community care support.

The London Legal Support Trust has responded to these challenges by providing funding to maintain infrastructure, retain staff, and ensure the availability of crucial services. In addition, the trust has supported agencies during the COVID-19 pandemic, which increased the demand for legal help and created financial burdens for advice agencies. The trust collaborates with other funders to provide necessary funds for agencies to adapt their services and meet the growing needs of the community. By supporting access to justice and addressing crises faced by individuals, the London Legal Support Trust plays a vital role in maintaining the availability of legal advice and assistance.
